Suitable For
The Bariatric plus sized chairs are suitable for either a health or home environment. They offer clients and carers movement options that support good posture, pressure management and independent living. The range of mechanisms is ideal for those clients:
- who are unable to independently shift their weight either in a reclined or seated position.
- with poor skin integrity where there is a high risk of skin breakdown.
- with complex needs that require carer support to change position without putting their own health at risk whilst carrying out positional changes.
On some mechanisms the back recline works independently of the leg rest enabling a wide range of relaxing positions, from sitting upright and raising the leg rest to relieve tired legs to a fully reclined resting position. The leg elevation can support reduction in oedema and fluid retention. This reduced fluid in the lower limbs allows a user to maintain their standing and walking abilities. The rise position on some mechanisms supports standing, enabling the person to walk away more easily.
The three waterfall cushions are fixed on some models and on others are removable as standard. With all removable back cushions they can be repositioned to change the seating position to aid posture. The waterfall cushion can be useful for those with mild kyphosis, scoliosis and reduced muscle mass on their back.
The waterfall back is complemented by a choice of five different seat cushions all with different pressure management qualities. Choose the one that best suits the postural and pressure management conditions of the client.
These chairs can also be used as part of a 24-hour postural care programme to reduce the risk of skin breakdown and its features also ensure that a user can be repositioned to allow for optional occupational performance, thus allowing an individual to engage in activities they want to do.

Key Features
The Bariatric range comes with the following key features as standard. There is the option to purchase additional features and these are detailed in the Optional Accessories Section.
MechanismThe Bariatric range comes with the option of choosing one of the following mechanisms:
They all of which have different features which are described in more detail In the Mechanisms Section, including video clips. Always ensure that the weight limits are checked for the client and particularly for conditions such as Lymphedema or Oedema.
Three Tier Waterfall Back CushionDepending on the model chosen there will be either a fixed or removable three-tiered waterfall back cushion. With the three removable and replaceable waterfall cushions they can be repositioned enabling the user to be seated and their posture supported correctly to meet their individual needs. The comfort and postural options are further enhanced with the ability to adjust the firmness of each individual cushion by adding or taking away fibres. Covers can also be removed for cleaning or replacement. See Back Cushion Section for details on this back cushion.
Back BlockersOn some of the models back blockers come as standard, on others they are available as an optional accessory. At the back of the waterfall cushions, sleeves can be fitted to accommodate the blockers to provide additional postural support. The position of each back cushion can be adapted with blockers to adjust the shape and support for the specific needs of each user. Blockers are provided as standard.
Pressure Management Seat CushionsThere is a choice of 5 interchangeable seat cushions each with different pressure management features. You can purchase one or more cushions to support the different needs of individuals who may use this chair. Cushions and covers are removable for cleaning. With all these seat cushions we recommend a fabric with four way stretch properties to aid reduction of shear and friction. See Seat Cushion Section for details of the individual cushions.
Chaise CoverThe Bariatric chairs benefit from a single, full seat cover. This chaise reduces the risk of pressure areas developing due to pinch points and shear and friction when the chair reclines. Designed with a memory foam insert the chaise offers deep comfort. The chaise cover and memory foam can be removed for cleaning and replacement. Optional memory foam or gel seating for added comfort and pressure management.
Arm Rest DesignThere is a choice of three different styles of arm rest depending on the model chosen. For further details see Optional Accessories Section.

Heat and Massage Systems*There is the option to choose either a heat only system or a heat and massage system.
Heat Only SystemThis system comes with two heat modules, one fitted into the seat of the chair and the other in a loose cushion heat pad that you can use behind your back, on your lap or to one side. The pads are controlled separately with an easy to use handset which has two temperature settings.
Heat and Massage SystemThe Relaxor helps soothe tired and aching muscles with gentle vibration and warmth. A separate handset controls different vibration zones built into the chair to massage upper back, lower back, upper and lower thighs and calves. Choose your own intensity and speed of each of the pairs of pads. The heat pad in the bottom lumbar of the back cushion completes the relaxing process, exactly what is needed at the end of the day. Mechanisms
The most important aspect to consider before purchasing any healthcare chair are the seating positions that are required to aid the conditions of the client and address any pressure and postural management needs.
The Multi Bari is available with the following mechanisms. Please check the Sizes Section for all user weights and dimensions before selecting your chair. For demonstrations of the mechanisms described below please watch the relevant videos.
If you would like to find out about what mechanisms are available on other healthcare chairs from the Repose range please see the comparison chart below.
Single Tilt in Space/Dual Tilt in Space/Standard Dual Motor
DTIS and STIS (Common features)
The Tilt in Space movement features on both these mechanisms. It allows the seat to back angle to remain the same whilst the whole seating system is tilted backwards. This ensures that the angle of the hips, knees and ankles remain unaffected and the weight on the Ischial Tuberosities is reduced by redistributing the weight through the back. This constant angle also prevents shear and friction during movement.
This feature can also help when transferring someone in a sling as it can support better pelvic positioning by using gravity to position the user in the back of the chair in the optimal position.
Both these mechanisms have a rise position. As the chair rises the seat tilts forward slightly, transferring the weight to the knees whilst taking away the pressure from your hips thus allowing you to walk away more easily from the chair. The seat angle can be changed to provide further support by choosing the VAL Technology.
Dual Tilt In Space
Single Tilt In Space
DTIS (Only)
As well as the Tilt in Space and Rise functions, described above, the Dual Tilt in Space mechanism also features an independent backrest recline and independent leg rest movement:
- The independent recline allows the user to maintain flexibility over their body’s position, particularly the amount of hip flexion, enabling them to maximise comfort as well as managing health needs.
- The independent leg rest offers the user additional flexibility over positioning, allowing them to either use it in conjunction with the recline feature to create the optimal posture for their body shape.
Standard Dual Motor
The Standard Dual Motor comes with an independent backrest recline and independent leg rest enables a whole range of movements and positions to aid posture and pressure management. These movement features are described above in DTIS (only). It also has a rise function for ease of standing from a seated position.
Size Guide
Overall Weight Limits
The Multi-Bari has an overall weight limit range of between 222 Kg – 445 Kg (35 to 70 stone) depending on the model chosen. The leg rest capacity will depend on the model chosen and can range from 57 Kg to 159 Kg (9 to 25 stone).
Seat Cushion Weight Limits
Certain pressure management seat cushion options have their own overall weight limits details of which can be found in the Seat Cushion Section. The maximum leg rest weight limit is unaffected by the seat cushion.

LiquiformFor those who have good posture and mobility but sit for long periods of time and require pressure relief and supported comfort. Recommended for people with limited muscle bulk or at risk of excessive weight loss. This cushion has a high-density foam which offers a supportive and firm seat base. The foam is topped with a fluid liquid gel in a soft silicone cover which provides a high level of pressure relief. The liquid gel helps to dissipate heat and constantly adapts to the user’s movement.
CoolformFor those sitting for long periods with specific comfort issues such as a high risk of pressure sores. This cushion uses the latest medical grade silicone gel technology allowing pressure to be evenly distributed. The gel conforms to the shape of the body and equalises to body temperature.
