Suitable For

Its uniqueness lies in the Dual Tilt in Space mechanism combined with the interchangeable pressure management seat and back cushions, with the added advantage of being able to move users around easily, all enabling excellent comfort, postural and pressure management.

The Dual Tilt in Space (DTIS) mechanism make this chair ideal for clients with changing and deteriorating neurological conditions. It allows for multi positioning of the legs to reduce oedema and fluid retention, leading to increased comfort. The positional options can support people who have problems swallowing as well as those with blood pressure e.g. postural hypotension.

The Madison chair has been designed to support safe manoeuvring and reduce the number of moves required for those clients who can become distressed or have significant pain during hoisting:

  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Motor Neurone disease
  • End of life clients e.g. cancer

The chair can also be used as part of a 24-hour postural care programme to reduce the risk of skin breakdown and its features also ensure that a user can be repositioned to allow for optional occupational performance, thus allowing an individual to engage in activities they want to do.

The chair can be used with either a mobile or overhead hoist to support safe moving and handling techniques for carers.

This chair can be used in any health environment or for home care and is designed to blend into the décor.

Key Features

The Madison porter chair with Dual Tilt in Space (DTIS) mechanism is ideal for clients with changing and deteriorating neurological conditions. It allows for multi positioning of the legs to reduce oedema and fluid retention, leading to increased comfort. It can be used with either a mobile or overhead hoist to support safe moving and handling techniques for the carers.

It comes with the following key features as standard. There is the option to purchase additional features and these are detailed in the Optional Accessories Section.

For more information on seating posture and assessment please see our downloadable Clinical Posture Guide in the Brochure Section.

Mechanisms

The Madison is available with a Dual Tilt in Space (DTIS) mechanism. The Tilt in Space movement allows the seat to back angle to remain the same whilst the whole seating system is tilted backwards which prevents shearing and friction. It also reduces the weight on the Ischial Tuberosities and redistributes the weight through the back.

The Dual Tilt in Space also has independent backrest recline and independent leg rest movement as well as a rise function to support standing. These movements enable a wide range of positions to aid pressure management, postural control and comfort.

For further details on this mechanism, with video clips, visit the Mechanisms Section.

Pressure Management Back Cushions

There is a choice of six interchangeable and adjustable pressure management back cushions that enable the chair to be adapted to a single user’s changing needs or to adapt the chair to another user. This ensures greater longevity of its usage.

In addition, all cushions can be repositioned to suit a user’s individual seating preferences and fibres added or removed from fibre filled cushions to adjust firmness. Covers can also be removed for cleaning or replacement. See Back Cushion Section for details on the individual cushions.

Pressure Management Seat Cushions

There is a choice of eight interchangeable seat cushions each with different pressure management features. You can purchase one or more cushions to support the different needs of individuals who may use this chair.

Cushions and covers are removable for cleaning or replacement. With all these seat cushions we recommend a fabric with four way stretch properties to aid reduction of shear and friction. See Seat Cushion Section for details of the individual cushions.

Chaise Cover

The Madison benefits from a single, full seat cover. This chaise reduces the risk of pressure areas developing due to pinch points and shear and friction when the chair reclines. Designed with a memory foam insert the chaise offers deep comfort.

The chaise cover and memory foam can be removed for cleaning and replacement.

Castors

The Madison comes with heavy-duty lockable castors built in as standard.

Handset Loop on Arm

A handset loop comes as standard on the right hand side arm. As an optional extra you can choose to have this positioned differently.

Heavy-Duty Push Handle

For ease of movement the Madison comes with a heavy-duty push handle with rubber grips.

Optional Accessories

The following features can be purchased to enhance the functionality of the chair.

Seat Depth Adjustment

The Madison comes with the option to alter the seat depth with a choice of two sets of detachable adjuster pads, 25.4mm (1″) or 50.8mm (2″).

The seat depth should be long enough to support the upper part of the legs whilst allowing the back to rest comfortably on the backrest. If the seat is too long the user is likely to slouch in the chair to get their feet on the floor, which puts extra pressure on their lower spine, if too short it will cause additional pressure on the thighs risking potential skin breakdown.

High Wear Areas

The following covers, in matching fabric, can be purchased to protect high wear areas:

  • Full length arm covers
  • Head cover

Headrests

There are five headrests to choose from, all of which come with a Velcro tab allowing them to fit over the top cushions. For further details on each of these options please refer to the Headrests Section.

  • Head roll
  • Small head pillow
  • Small profile headrest
  • Large profile headrest
  • Midline headrest

Sliding Footplate*

There is an option to purchase a sliding footplate for providing support to the feet and legs when moving a person in the chair.

Safety Options*

For further details on the options below please refer to Safety Options Section.

  • Styleline handset with ON/OFF button
  • Accupak rechargeable battery system for mains free usage

* Please note that some of these additional features will need to be fitted at the point of manufacture.

Mechanisms

The most important aspect to consider before purchasing any healthcare chair are the seating positions that are required to aid the conditions of the client and address any pressure and postural management needs.

The Madison is available with a Dual Tilt in Space (DTIS) mechanism. Please check the Sizes Section for all user weights and dimensions before selecting your chair. For demonstrations of the mechanisms described below please watch the relevant videos.
Dual Tilt in Space

The Tilt in Space allows the seat to back angle to remain the same whilst the whole seating system is tilted backwards. This ensures that the angle of the hips, knees and ankles remain unaffected and the weight on the Ischial Tuberosities is reduced by redistributing the weight through the back. This constant angle also prevents shear and friction during movement.

This feature can also help when transferring someone in a sling as it can support better pelvic positioning by using gravity to position the user in the back of the chair in the optimal position.

This mechanism has a rise position. As the chair rises the seat tilts forward slightly, transferring the weight to the knees whilst taking away the pressure from your hips thus allowing you to walk away more easily from the chair.

As well as the Tilt in Space and Rise functions, described above, the Dual Tilt in Space mechanism also features an independent backrest recline and independent leg rest movement:

  • The independent recline allows the user to maintain flexibility over their body’s position, particularly the amount of hip flexion, enabling them to maximise comfort as well as managing health needs.
  • The independent leg rest offers the user additional flexibility over positioning, allowing them to either use it in conjunction with the recline feature to create the optimal posture for their body shape.
