Suitable For

Its uniqueness lies in the Single Tilt in Space recline only mechanism combined with the interchangeable pressure management seat and back cushions, with the added advantage of being able to move users around easily, all enabling excellent comfort, postural and pressure management.

The Single Tilt in Space mechanism makes this chair ideal for clients with changing and deteriorating neurological conditions. It allows for multi positioning of the legs to reduce oedema and fluid retention, leading to increased comfort. The seat to back angle remains the same whilst the whole seating system is tilted backwards allowing the angle of the hips, knees and ankles to remain unaffected during this movement. It also reduces the weight on the Ischial Tuberosities and redistributes the weight through the back.

Suitable for:

The Brooklyn has been designed to be moved around a care environment to reduce the amount of moves a client has to make but to also encourage independence by supporting sit to stand transfers and rest and relaxation. The chair can be easily altered to meet the individual needs.

  • Frail elderly
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Neurological conditions
  • Stroke

The Brooklyn can also be used as part of a 24-hour postural care programme to reduce the risk of skin breakdown and its features also ensure that a user can be repositioned to allow for optional occupational performance, thus allowing an individual to engage in activities they want to do.

The chair can be used with either a mobile or overhead hoist to support safe moving and handling techniques for carers.

This chair can be used in any health environment or for home care and is designed to blend into the décor.

Key Features

The Brooklyn comes with the following key features as standard. There is the option to purchase additional features and these are detailed in the Optional Accessories Section.

Mechanisms

The Brooklyn is available with a Single Tilt in Space (STIS) recline only mechanism. The Tilt in Space movement allows the seat to back angle to remain the same whilst the whole seating system is tilted backwards which prevents shearing and friction. It also reduces the weight on the Ischial Tuberosities and redistributes the weight through the back.

For further details on this mechanism, with video clips, visit the Mechanism Section.

Pressure Management Back Cushions

There is a choice of seven interchangeable and adjustable pressure management back cushions that enable the chair to be adapted to a single user’s changing needs or to adapt the chair to another user. This ensures greater longevity of its usage.

In addition, all cushions can be repositioned to suit a user’s individual seating preferences and fibres added or removed from fibre filled cushions to adjust firmness. Covers can also be removed for cleaning and replacement. See Back Cushion Section for details on the individual cushions.

Pressure Management Seat Cushions

There is a choice of ten interchangeable seat cushions each with different pressure management features. You can purchase one or more cushions to support the different needs of individuals who may use this chair.

Cushions and covers are removable for cleaning and replacement. With all these seat cushions we recommend a fabric with four way stretch properties to aid reduction of shear and friction. See Seat Cushion Section for details of the individual cushions.

Chaise Cover

The Brooklyn benefits from a single, full seat cover. This chaise reduces the risk of pressure areas developing due to pinch points, shear and friction when the chair reclines. Designed with a memory foam insert the chaise offers deep comfort.

The chaise cover and memory foam can be removed for cleaning and replacement.

Sliding Footplate

A sliding footplate is fitted as standard to support portering. It has a removable cover for cleaning or replacement.

D-Rings

These are fitted as standard.

Castors

The Brooklyn comes with four heavy-duty large lockable castors as standard.

Optional Accessories

The following features can be purchased to enhance the functionality of the chair.

Seat Depth Adjustment

The Brooklyn comes with the option to alter the seat depth with a choice of two sets of detachable adjuster pads, 25.4mm (1″) or 50.8mm (2″).

The seat depth should be long enough to support the upper part of the legs whilst allowing the back to rest comfortably on the backrest. If the seat is too long the user is likely to slouch in the chair to get their feet on the floor, which puts extra pressure on their lower spine, if too short it will cause additional pressure on the thighs risking potential skin breakdown.

Lap Strap and Pad

A lap strap and pad can be purchased to ensure safe movement of a user in the chair.

Full Length Arm Covers

Replaceable pairs of arm covers can be purchased to protect the arms from wear.

Headrests

There are five headrests to choose from, all of which come with a Velcro tab allowing them to fit over the top cushions. For further details on each of these options please refer to the Headrests Section.

  • Head roll
  • Small head pillow
  • Small profile headrest
  • Large profile headrest
  • Midline headrest

Handset Loop on Arm*

An additional handset loop can be added to the arm on either side, to allow the chair to be operated by the user.

Safety Options*

For further details on the options below please refer to Safety Options Section.

  • Styleline handset with on / off button
  • Accupak rechargeable battery system for mains free usage

* Please note that some of these additional features will need to be fitted at the point of manufacture.

Mechanisms

The most important aspect to consider before purchasing any healthcare chair are the seating positions that are required to aid the conditions of the client and address any pressure and postural management needs.

The Brooklyn is available with a Single Tilt in Space (STIS) recline only mechanism. Please check the Sizes Section for all user weights and dimensions before selecting your chair. For demonstrations of the mechanisms described below please watch the relevant videos.

If you would like to find out about what mechanisms are available on other healthcare chairs from the Repose range please see the comparison chart below.

Single Tilt in Space recline only

The Tilt in Space movement allows the seat to back angle to remain the same whilst the whole seating system is tilted backwards. This ensures that the angle of the hips, knees and ankles remain unaffected and the weight on the Ischial Tuberosities is reduced by redistributing the weight through the back. This constant angle also prevents shear and friction during movement.

This feature can also help when transferring someone in a sling as it can support better pelvic positioning by using gravity to position the user in the back of the chair in the optimal position.

Celliform

For those sitting for long periods with specific comfort issues such as a high risk of pressure sores. Gelacell has a unique cell matrix that distributes pressure across the contact area, as it contours and yields in response to weight redistribution. Gelacell absorbs body heat, reducing the risk of creating an environment that could increase pressure risks, the grid design also encourages air circulation. Gelacell is clinically tested and passes all dermatological tests for skin contact.
